The field of law has been highly populated with the male lawyers for a very long time, like every other field. But time changes and women started to become educated. They conquered the fields which were meant to be men’s forte. One of them the field of law which was highly male dominated but there are some women advocates who not only empowered themselves but also fought for the rights of others.
1. Menaka Guruswamy
Being an advocate at the Supreme Court of India, Menaka Guruswamy has dedicated her life to the cause of serving the justice. She believes in the quote, "to advocate, for those who cannot tell their own stories, to defend those whose freedom is in peril, to prod a nation to ask of itself: for whom am I, and for what was I created?". She has worked a lot on Constitutional Law and has played an instrumental role in defending a provision in the Right to Education Act. The law made it compulsory that all private schools admit disadvantaged children. She was among the lawyers arguing for the Naz foundation while challenging Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.
2. Vrinda Grover
Vrinda Grover was among the 100 most influential women in the world in 2013, in the list prepared by TIME magazine. She is a lawyer and human rights activist and has played a significant role in the women's rights movement in India. She has dealt with cases like domestic violence cases and cases involving sexual minorities. She has been influential in the drafting of the Criminal Law Amendment of 2013, the POCSO Act 2012 and the Prevention of Torture Bill, 2010.
3. Indira Jaising
Indira Jaising is among one of the most celebrated women lawyers in India. She has an amazing hold on the law, with that she can take down anyone who might pose a threat to the rights enjoyed by women in India. She has been a part of the movement for human rights in India and has dedicated her life to fighting for the cause of human rights. In 1981, She along with her husband founded Lawyers Collective, a human rights organisation. SHe has played a key role in the framing of the Domestic Violence Act (2005). Her most recent accolades include a major victory in Priya Pillai's case where the High Court ruled that the state cannot muzzle dissent. She is the first woman to be appointed as an Additional Solicitor General of India (2009).
4. Pinky Anand
Pinky Anand is deemed to be an expert in the field of Constitutional Law, Family Law, Environmental Law. She is a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India and was appointed to be an Additional Solicitor General of India and, the second woman to have been appointed to this post.
5. Flavia Agnes
Flavia Agnes is the co-Founder of an organization called 'Majlis' that acts as a legal representation for women. She is an author, legal scholar, women's rights activist and lawyer. Her work on feminist jurisprudence is significant and worth noticing. She is renowned for her services to destitute women on legal matters. She had played an instrumental role in the formation of the Forum Against Oppression of Women (FAOW), a campaign group that dealt with issues involving wife beating, dowry and sexual harassment in 1979.
