Indian Judicial system is one of the largest in the world and it is led by the Supreme Court of India which is the apex body in the judiciary system. It came into existence on 26th Jan 2018. It is laid down in Part V of chapter V of the Constitution of India from articles 124 to 127.

It functions as the custodian of the Constitution. It is the uppermost body which listens to the appeal against verdicts of the High courts of the state and union territories. The Chief Justice of India works as the supreme governing official at Supreme Court.
Interesting Facts about Supreme Court of India
1. The Federal court of India which was established by the Government of India Act 1935 and the Privy Council, which were the supreme judicial body in India pre Independence. Supreme court of India was established on 28 January 1950.

2. From 1937-1950 Chamber of Princes (A part of parliament premises at present) was used as the bench of Judicature and later as Supreme Court of India until 1958.

3. In initial years, the supreme court used to meet for 28 days in a year but today, it meets for 190 days in a year.

4. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India laid the foundation stone of the Supreme Court building.

5. It is situated in Hardinge Avenue; a17 Acre triangular plot designed in an Indo-British architectural style. Chief architect was Ganesh Bhikaji Deolaikar.

6. The shape of the building of Supreme Court is designed in such a way that it represents the scales of  Justice.

7. The left and right wings of the building represents two scales. The Right Wing includes offices of the Attorney General of India and other law officers, the bar-room and the library  Left Wing consists of the offices of the Court.

8. East and West were added to the structure in 1979 and the last extension was added in 1994.

9. A statue on 20 Feb 1980 was established in lawn premises of Supreme Court that portrays Mother India as the lady and the child has shown like this symbolises that she is protecting the young Republic of India and book represents the laws of the land and the balance shown in the book represents equal justice is given to all.

10. The first women judge and the first woman judge of Supreme court of India, Ms Anna Chandy was from Kerala.
